Rope inspection, wire rope inspection and lifting gear inspection — hands-on, with component replacement and load testing when the job calls for it.

The service

Inspected by hand. Tested when the job calls for it.

Most of this work is physical. Our dedicated inspector goes over rope, wire, hardware and assemblies by hand and eye — wear, damage, deformation, broken or deteriorated components, and the mechanical defects that decide whether gear keeps working — using other inspection tools as the item requires.

Some of it earns a place on the 500,000 lb bed. A great deal of it never needs to go there. Where a component is worn or damaged it can be replaced with new before the equipment returns to service, and each item is supplied with the applicable test certificate and inspection documentation.

What we take on, and what we don't.

Worth knowing before you load the truck. If your job is on the right-hand side, call the shop anyway — we would rather point you somewhere useful than take the work.

Worth saying plainly

  • Not everything needs the bed. Much of this work is inspection, and we will tell you when a test would only be theatre.
  • We are not a third-party test laboratory. The certificate records what we inspected and tested on that item, and nothing beyond it.
  • The bed is about 20 ft usable. Longer assemblies are testable, but the extended setup has to be arranged in advance.
  • We document what we have inspected and tested ourselves, and nothing we have not.

The test bay

Every photograph below is our own bay. Most of what comes through it is handled, judged and sent back without ever going near the machine — and the machine is here for the jobs where a judgement is not enough.

The inspector

A customer's gear arrives as a crate of shackles, links, eye bolts and hoists, and our dedicated inspector looks at every piece in it on its own — pin and thread condition, legible markings, anything bent, worn or corroded. Most of a crate like this is settled here, at the bench, without the machine.

Worn, and replaced

Finding it is half the job. A lifting frame back from service with new chain, new shackles and connectors fitted and the steel repainted — worn components changed out for new before the gear returns to work, rather than written down and handed back.

Setting the run

Specimen, length, initial load and upper limit go in before anything moves, and the trace records the load as it climbs. A break test is set up differently from a proof test, and the controller is where that difference is made.

Rigged for the pull

Back out, and logged

Wire rope pullers gone through as a batch — hooks, wire rope, pawls and gripping jaws. Worn or damaged parts are replaced as needed, including wire rope and handles, and each tool is documented before it goes back. What was inspected is recorded. What was not is not.

What you get back

The gear, fit to work — and the paperwork that says so.

Nothing leaves the bay on a verbal. What comes back is the item itself, any component we had to change out, and the documentation that records what was done to it.

Frequently asked questions

No — and most of it does not. The majority of this work is hands-on inspection: checking rope, wire, hardware and assemblies for wear, deformation and broken or deteriorated components. The bed is for the jobs that need a number rather than a judgement, and we will tell you which yours is.

Both. Where a component is worn or damaged it can be replaced with new before the equipment goes back to service, rather than sending you away with a list.

The bed is rated to 500,000 lb — 226.8 tonnes, or 2,224 kN. The usable bed is about 20 ft, and the setup extends for longer assemblies by arrangement, so length is more often the limit than load.

Both. Proof testing is for gear returning to service. Break testing takes a sample to failure, which is how a termination or a new design gets proved rather than assumed.

Each tested item is inspected by our dedicated inspector and supplied with the applicable test certificate and inspection documentation.

No, and we would rather say so plainly. We test on our own bed and issue the certificate for the item we tested — a record of that item's test. It is not external approval of your wider system. If your buyer or insurer needs that, tell us up front and we will point you to the right route.

Field and site inspection is available for supported work. Testing on the bed means the item comes to the shop.
